Fortnightly update 28: 21.12.2020 to 03.01.2021

In this blog series, I share my fortnight-to-fortnight triumphs (and failures) as a writer. Despite all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Flash fiction and short stories

I’m currently submitting flash fiction and short stories to online magazines and such for publication. This fortnight, my story “Human Suit” got accepted into Issue 271 of AntipodeanSF, which will go live in April. It’s a bit more of a light-hearted story which everyone can enjoy, and I can’t bloody wait to share it with you. This is my third acceptance so far, and I’m waiting to hear back on another few really strong stories. Fingers crossed.

Frontier Media

I write scripts for Frontier Media, a media production company specialising in YouTube. Our two largest channels are The Front and Geetsly’s, and while I’ve written for Geetsly’s in the past, I mostly write for The Front and our new, smaller channel The Braved. Four videos for which I wrote the scripts were published this fortnight, including The Braved’s debut video.

Twitter

I write 280-character stories using various writing prompt hashtags on Twitter. This fortnight, I handed the #WeirdVSS over to another host, as is fairly customary in the Twitter #vss writing community, and I wrote three stories.

#ooze

My needle-marks ooze a tar-like pus, yet I stay on the hunt for fresh veins. Each time, I’m closer to the Baron and his black throne among the stars, but also my death. Even if the latter comes first, it’s better to strive for eternity than never to have tried.

#vulture

Death tails me in the sky like a vulture, but only I can see him. I’m not sure if it was that stupid ritual or if he has always been there, just visible to me now. I can feel him even when I sleep, hungering, getting closer. Believe me, it’s better not knowing.

#corruption

I draw a line down my forearm with the scalpel and peel to the meat, which I snip loose at the tendon. When I see my true self for the first time in aeons, I sigh with relief. Free of the corruption that is flesh, I jangle down the street, reborn wonderfully in bone.

Conclusion

Being a freelancer, I don’t really get any holiday benefits, so I’ve had to continue working a little this fortnight, but, to be honest, I kind of enjoy it. I feel like a sponge if I don’t take a career step each day. Maybe that’s crazy. We’ll see. Anyway, I’m hoping this will be a big year for my short fiction, and like I said, I can’t wait to share it with you all.

Happy New Year, and thanks for reading <3
