Fortnightly update 40: 07.06.2021 to 20.06.2021

In this blog series, I share my fortnight-to-fortnight triumphs (and failures) as a writer. Despite all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Short fiction

I’m currently submitting short fiction, mostly flash fiction and short stories, to online magazines and such for publication. This fortnight was pretty quiet on that front. I’ve been chipping away at a few stories but can’t seem to figure a couple of them out. I did manage to polish and submit one story, though, which is nice! Also, I announced that my story Widow of the River got accepted last fortnight. That was with Crow & Cross Keys, and it’s gonna be a WHILE before it goes live.

For now, here at this fortnight’s stats:

Submissions: 1
Pending: 5
Rejections: 0
Acceptances: 0

Frontier Media

I write scripts for Frontier Media, a media production company specialising in YouTube. Our two largest channels are The Front and Geetsly’s, and while I’ve written a little for Geetsly’s in the past, I mostly write for The Front and our new, smaller channel The Braved. Five videos for which I wrote the scripts were published this fortnight, and our baby The Braved also spiked, with one of our videos breaching 300k views and still climbing. Exciting times! Here are my total stats:

Videos for The Front: 93
Videos for The Braved: 21

Twitter

I write 280-character stories and poems using various writing prompt hashtags, mostly #vss365, on Twitter. I wrote four this fortnight! The last few were American haiku or lunes, which uses a 5-3-5-syllable structure and don’t have any other restrictions. I even tried to make a little interactive fiction piece with lunes, but the form ended up being a poor fit for the type of story I had in mind, so I ditched it, and that led me to explore haiku a little more. I ended up spending like 12 hours researching and writing haiku, haha. I think I’ve found a new thing.

#avarice

In his avarice he acquired a relic unalike the million coins and jewels in his treasury. It bore the markings of a race long buried and rid him of all earthly desire. Now there is only it — a horror buried even deeper than that dead race, a mouth that calls his name.

#dispose

every body they dispose
down here
is a new friend
or a meal

#hunger

He was mesmerised by the fire’s appetite, its hunger, and followed it as it levelled forest and village alike. He wept with joy as it raged, and anguish as it grew dim and tired. With its last lick, he lit a candle, and held it close, so close, aching to begin once more.

#ride

raindrops crowd the glass
my windshield
seabirds
ride west winds

#swords

grass swords cross the moon
reflected
in a swan’s black pool

Conclusion

I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m working on a secret project at the moment (well, one major one and a few minors ones), and that’s taking up a fair bit of my time. I’ve got to find a way to balance it with my short fiction submissions because I do not want to slow down too much with those. Can’t wait to share the project with you.

And thanks for reading <3
