Fortnightly update 44: 02.08.2021 to 15.08.2021

In this blog series, I share my fortnight-to-fortnight triumphs (and failures) as a writer. Despite all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Short fiction

I’m currently submitting short fiction, mostly flash fiction and short stories, to online magazines and such for publication. This fortnight was tooouuuggghhh. I scored two rejections on the same day, which in itself is fairly normal, but I had such high hopes for those submissions, and it bloody hurt. I did also draft one of my strongest short stories to date, so that improved my mood, and I started my first epistolary piece too, with which I’m having a great deal of fun. That’s the game, I guess. Cherish those wins you get them.

Here are this fortnight’s stats:

Submissions: 3
Pending: 6
Rejections: 3
Acceptances: 0
Rejections 2021 (from June 8th): 7

Other projects

I managed to put aside a few hours to work on my grandad’s memoir this fortnight, and I’m pretty happy with how it’s going so far. It’s shaping up to be a fairly short piece, with most of the focus on my grandad’s childhood in Macedonia and how it was affected by the Greek Civil War.

A while back I mentioned I’d written a children’s story. Finally I’m doing something with that now, turning it into an animated children’s book with some of my friends from Frontier Media. I can’t wait to share more about this soon.

There’s also my other super secret project I’m working on with my friend Patrick. We’re hoping we can reveal something about it by the end of this month. Stay tuned.

Oh yeah. I’m also beta reading a novel for a friend. I’ve never done it before, but it’s providing me with much insight. It’s also a lot of work!

Frontier Media

I write scripts for Frontier Media, a media production company specialising in YouTube. Our two largest channels are The Front and Geetsly’s, and while I’ve written a little for Geetsly’s in the past, I mostly write for The Front and our new, smaller channel The Braved. Four of my videos went live this fortnight. And here are my total stats:

Videos for The Front: 98
Videos for The Braved: 29

Twitter

I write 280-character stories and poems using various writing prompt hashtags, mostly #vss365, on Twitter. I wrote five this fortnight, some of my best to date.

#eclipse

It was always “sacrifice this” and “summon that.” Couldn’t Troy stay home and enjoy at least ONE lunar eclipse with his family? He shrugged, tossed his pointy hat on the floor, and cracked a beer. Yeah, just for this one bloody night, the cult could get fucked.

#nourish

The great mother, holes in her white leathery wings, could only nourish her young on the village under the cliff for so long. Soon they would be strong enough to take flight and learn the sting of man’s arrows for themselves. Soon, but not yet. For now, they were hers.

#reviving

The necromancer had spent his years reviving the dead and had never thought to test his magic on the living. It happened by chance. His target’s back straightened and face lifted in bliss. Somewhere in the necromancer’s black heart, there was a spark. It felt… good.

Conclusion

This fortnight was bumpy, but I think overall I came out on top! Not much else to say.
