Fortnightly update 50: 25.10.2021 to 07.11.2021
In this blog series, I share my fortnight-to-fortnight triumphs (and failures) as a writer. Despite all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Short fiction
I’m currently submitting short fiction, mostly flash fiction and short stories, to online magazines and such for publication. I put out a new story out for consideration this fortnight and copped a few rejections, which I still need to send back out there to bring my pending stories back up. Look, it’s been a while since I’ve had an acceptance, but I’m not feeling too bad about it because I’m fricking working hard.
Here are this fortnight’s stats:
Submissions: 2
Pending: 6
Rejections: 3
Acceptances: 0
Rejections 2021 (from June 8th): 24
Freelance
I’ve been thinking a lot about my freelance work this fortnight. I’ve got a great steady client (Frontier Media), but it’s been a while since I’ve written for someone else. I’d like to broaden my portfolio a bit and do some learning. I’m thinking about getting into copywriting. I’ve also forced myself out of my home office by joining a co-working space. Hopefully I can meet some new friends through that and broaden my professional network. I’ll keep you posted about that, but they have a printer at the co-working space, so finally, finally I can print my D&D character sheets without going to Officeworks. Woo.
Frontier Media
I write scripts for Frontier Media, a media production company specialising in YouTube. Our two largest channels are The Front and Geetsly’s, and while I’ve written a little for Geetsly’s in the past, I mostly write for The Front and our new, smaller channel The Braved. Five of my videos went live this fortnight, but I forgot one last fortnight, so here they all are. The top one, Spicer-Simson, is so underrated. He was a weird, weird man.
And here are my total stats:
Videos for The Front: 110
Videos for The Braved: 41
I write 280-character stories and poems using various writing prompt hashtags, mostly #vss365, on Twitter. I wrote just two this fortnight. I can see at least the second one working as a good prompt for a future story.
#foreshadowed
The fortuneteller might have foreshadowed my death, but she sure didn’t see hers coming. I shot her between the eyes with my Ruger and left her to rot in her caravan. Why did I care if I was going to drown at 62? In this line of work, anything over 50’s a miracle.
#sleepwalking
My daughter is just sleepwalking, that’s all. I never saw the slender shadow clinging to her back, puppeteering her legs and arms. Nope, like I said, sleepwalking. And Mum always said that it’s best not to interfere with sleepwalkers. She never woke me.
Conclusion
In other news, this is my 50th fortnightly update, which is pretty nuts. I’ve managed to put one out every fortnight for almost two years. I am proud of me.
