Fortnightly update 56: 17.01.2022 to 30.01.2022

In this blog series, I share my fortnight-to-fortnight triumphs (and failures) as a writer. Despite all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Spinning Yarns

The biggest news (not just for me but for the world) this fortnight is 100% the release of my podcast Spinning Yarns with Nick & Paddy, about storytelling in all its forms. We read our own stories and poems, and we talk about stories we love, Bloodborne, The Witch, and The Wire, to name just a few.

For much of 2021, my buddy Patrick and I slaved away at this, writing content, recording episodes, and pulling out our hair editing audio. Now we’ve got a pretty (terrifying) logo and three episodes online. It feels fucking great, and all we really want is for you, yes YOU, to give it a listen.  For now, you can do so via SpotifyYouTube, and Podbean. A quick profanity warning, and enjoy!

Turje: A Ghost Town

The second biggest news of this fortnight is my grandad’s memoir: it’s done. And what a journey that was. I now know my grandfather in a way I never had before. I learnt so much about my heritage as well, back in Greek Macedonia. You can read it for free via the PDF below, or pick it up for cheap on Kindle.

Short fiction

I’m currently submitting short fiction, mostly flash fiction and short stories, to online magazines and such for publication. This fortnight, I submitted a cheeky folk horror story to a competition and sent out my “good necromancer” story for the eighth time. I’m still working on a longer piece (probably a novelette), which is eating up a lot of my writing time. I’m very eager to draft that bad boy and send it off for feedback.

Here are this fortnight’s stats:

Submissions: 2
Pending: 6
Rejections: 1
Acceptances: 0
Rejections 2022: 2

Frontier Media

I write scripts for Frontier Media, a media production company specialising in YouTube. Our two largest channels are The Front and Geetsly’s, and while I’ve written a little for Geetsly’s in the past, I mostly write for The Front and our new, smaller channel The Braved. Five of my videos went up this fortnight, including one about drugs in the Vietnam War, a script I had a lot of fun with!

And here are my total stats:

Videos for The Front: 118
Videos for The Braved: 52

Conclusion

It had been so long since I’d finished a big project that I was starting to feel like I wasn’t creating anything anymore. But in the span of one fortnight, I released two pretty huge projects, and I’m ecstatic. It’s funny how the momentum of one project can carry you through another.

Until next time, thanks for reading <3
