Fortnightly update 61: 28.03.2022 to 10.04.2022
In this series, I share my fortnight-to-fortnight triumphs (and failures) as a writer. Despite all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Short fiction
I’m currently submitting short fiction, mostly flash fiction and short stories, to online magazines and such for publication. There can be no denying it, things have slowed wayyy down, but I do have two stories waiting on two prestigious shortlists, so there’s that. My 10k-word story Army of the Bear got rejected this fortnight. Usually, that’s fine, but I honestly can’t find anywhere else to submit the thing. I may try and self-publish this one just to see how I like it.
Here are this fortnight’s stats:
Submissions: 0
Pending: 5
Rejections: 1
Acceptances: 0
Rejections 2022: 7
Spinning Yarns
My mate Patrick and I recently released our podcast Spinning Yarns with Nick & Paddy, which is about storytelling in all its forms. Episode 8 went live this fortnight. We read my story Demon Love (originally published by Black Hare Press), a poem about Patrick’s daddy, and an essay on BoJack Horseman. As for recording, there have been a few bumps in the road, but we’re doing episode 12 this coming Friday.

Copywriting: Frontier Media
I write scripts for Frontier Media, a media production company specialising in YouTube content. Our two largest channels are The Front and Geetsly’s, and while I’ve written a little for Geetsly’s in the past, I mostly write for The Front and our new, smaller channel The Braved. Just two of my videos went up this fortnight.
And here are my total stats:
Videos for The Front: 125
Videos for The Braved: 61
Thoughts
I hinted, vaguely, at some personal troubles last fortnight. I’m still in the throes of those, trying to get back to my writing routine, which was absolutely working. For those interested, I’d wake at 5:50 AM, start writing fiction at 6 AM, write through to 8 AM, take an hour break, and then do my client work from 9 AM till 5 or 6 PM. It’s the best routine I’ve come up with so far, and it allowed for weekends too. I’m moving into a shoebox apartment about a week from now, so I’ll have all the solitude in the world. I am going to write some strange things indeed.
