Fortnightly update 62: 11.04.2022 to 24.04.2022

In this series, I share my fortnight-to-fortnight triumphs (and failures) as a writer. Despite all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Short fiction

I’m currently submitting short fiction, mostly flash fiction and short stories, to online magazines and such for publication.

Sooo, the two stories I had pending on longlists/shortlists last fortnight were both rejected this fortnight. These were with Flash Fiction Online and Aurealis, two excellent publications I’ve been trying to crack since this whole writing thing started. I did get some wicked feedback, however, and applied it to both stories, which I submitted elsewhere. They’re much, much improved, and I have high hopes.

Moving forward, I’m going to polish up the handful of stories I’ve sat on for a few months now, and then, once they’re sent off, draft one short story (probably flash fiction) each week. I do love me some flash fiction.

Here are this fortnight’s stats:

Submissions: 5
Pending: 6
(5 stories; 1 sim sub)
Rejections: 5
Acceptances: 0
Rejections 2022:
11 (I think I miscounted this last fortnight; 11 is correct)

Spinning Yarns

My mate Patrick and I recently released our podcast Spinning Yarns with Nick & Paddy, which is about storytelling in all its forms.

Episode 9 went live this fortnight. We read a fun, pulpy sci-fi story called “Brain Slug,” a poem about Paddy’s mum, and an essay about precious moments, centred around a song by Billie Holiday.

In the coming weeks, we’re going to get more on top of our marketing game, too, so look forward to that.

Copywriting: Frontier Media

I write scripts for Frontier Media, a media production company specialising in YouTube content. Our two largest channels are The Front and Geetsly’s, and while I’ve written a little for Geetsly’s in the past, I mostly write for The Front and our new, smaller channel The Braved.

Just two of my videos went up this fortnight. The Douglas Mawson one was a nice change of pace.

And here are my total stats:

Videos for The Front: 127
Videos for The Braved: 63

Thoughts

So I moved into my shoebox in Fremantle this fortnight. It has been quite surreal so far, dreamlike. But I’m starting to find great comfort here, and I know moving here was absolutely the right choice. I’ve got clear goals, more than enough time to achieve them, and plenty of awesome people around me. I just need my bloody internet to come already!
