Fortnightly update 63: 25.04.2022 to 08.05.2022

In this series, I share my fortnight-to-fortnight triumphs (and failures) as a writer. Despite all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Short fiction

I’m currently submitting short fiction, mostly flash fiction and short stories, to online magazines and such for publication.

Submissions were slow-ish this fortnight (for me, anyway; compared to some other writers, I am an actual slug), but I started reading for Etherea Magazine, a wicked Australian speculative mag. As a reader, I read and judge story submissions to the magazine, deciding if they move to the next round or not. I’ve ALWAYS wanted to try this, and it has been super enlightening so far.

Here are this fortnight’s stats:

Submissions: 4
Pending: 6
(5 stories; 1 sim sub)
Rejections: 4
Acceptances: 0
Rejections 2022:
14

Spinning Yarns

My mate Patrick and I recently released our podcast Spinning Yarns with Nick & Paddy, which is about storytelling in all its forms.

Episode 10 went live this fortnight. It’s probably our most twisted yet.

You have been warned.

Copywriting: Chad Gerber Photography

My client (and friend) Chad Gerber had his award-winning film Lens screen at an event in Perth called Pickle District After Dark on the weekend, and because I helped write the script, I got to tag along as a VIP and stand up in front of a crowd of people who clapped at us. It was sick.

Among other awards, Lens has won Best Inspirational Film at the 2021 LA Film Awards and Best Australian Short Film at the 2022 Australian Film Festival.

Here it is:

Copywriting: Frontier Media

I write scripts for Frontier Media, a media production company specialising in YouTube content. Our two largest channels are The Front and Geetsly’s, and while I’ve written a little for Geetsly’s in the past, I mostly write for The Front and our new, smaller channel The Braved.

Five of my videos went up this fortnight, including my three-part one on the First Indochina War. I think it came together pretty well!

And here are my total stats:

Videos for The Front: 129
Videos for The Braved: 66

Thoughts

As per my last update, still no internet at my new place. Just end me now.

In other news, I’m pretty much back on track with my writing routine, and it feels good. I’ve also become a regular at a pub for the first time in my life, so I am also well on track to fulfilling that writer stereotype.

Cheers <3
