Fortnightly update 65: 23.05.2022 to 05.06.2022

(I accidentally overwrote fortnightly update 64 with this one. Whoops.)

In this series, I share my fortnight-to-fortnight triumphs (and failures) as a writer. Despite all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Short fiction

I’m currently submitting short fiction, mostly flash fiction and short stories, to online magazines and such for publication.

This fortnight, I finally submitted my entry to the Best Australian Yarn competition. This was after five full rewrites and scores of edits. While only 2,500 words, it was the most difficult prose project I’ve worked on yet. I tried to cram so much into this sandwich, and I’m stoked with how it’s come out. Maybe the judges will like it, too, but either way, I’m happy I fought and died on the hill that was this story.

I also had my Macedonian folk horror story Army of the Bear accepted by Dark Lake for publication in their anthology Their Ghoulish Reputation, which is nice. I was worried I wouldn’t find a home for this one.

Here are this fortnight’s stats:

Submissions: 1
Pending: 6
(5 stories; 1 sim sub)
Rejections: 2
Acceptances: 1
Rejections 2022:
16

Spinning Yarns

My mate Patrick and I recently released our podcast Spinning Yarns with Nick & Paddy, which is about storytelling in all its forms.

Episode 12 went live this fortnight. Patrick reads my story “Embryo,” which was previously published in an anthology by Quill & Crow and a poem about having a break from being himself, and we discuss the book The Master and Margarita. We’ve also been going around Fremantle finding artists to interview for season two. Exciting stuff.

Under the Spinning Yarns umbrella, we’re also looking to do horror reading nights in Fremantle, and have already sent a proposal to the Fremantle Arts Centre, an old asylum which would suit our project perfectly. More on this soon, hopefully!

Copywriting: Frontier Media

I write scripts for Frontier Media, a media production company specialising in YouTube content. Our two largest channels are The Front and Geetsly’s, and while I’ve written a little for Geetsly’s in the past, I mostly write for The Front and our new, smaller channel The Braved.

Three of my videos went up this fortnight.

And here are my total stats:

Videos for The Front: 133
Videos for The Braved: 70

Thoughts

Inside and outside of writing, it has been a busy, stressful fortnight. I’ve had some crushing defeats and epic wins. I’ve been miserable and the happiest I’ve ever been. I wonder what this coming fortnight will deliver me.
