Fortnightly update 66: 06.06.2022 to 19.06.2022

In this series, I share my fortnight-to-fortnight triumphs (and failures) as a writer. Despite all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Short fiction

I’m currently submitting short fiction, mostly flash fiction and short stories, to online magazines and such for publication.

This fortnight was a weird one. I spent most of the hours I dedicate to my fiction beta reading for friends and going through the feedback they gave me on my upcoming fantasy story The Menticider, which I should be ready to submit in the next two weeks. I also found out a story I thought I submitted was never actually submitted, which was a nice surprise. I’d got my hopes up for that one.

Here are this fortnight’s stats:

Submissions: 0
Pending: 4
(4 stories; 0 sim subs)
Rejections: 1
Acceptances: 0
Rejections 2022:
17

Spinning Yarns

My mate Patrick and I recently released our podcast Spinning Yarns with Nick & Paddy, which is about storytelling in all its forms.

We were supposed to but didn’t release episode 13 (our season one finale) this fortnight. This is because we’re trying to record our first-ever interview, and it has been quite difficult to get all three of us in the same room and make it happen. Hopefully, we can get it done this coming fortnight. I’m super excited to start focusing on content generation and marketing for season two.

Copywriting: Frontier Media

I write scripts for Frontier Media, a media production company specialising in YouTube content. Our two largest channels are The Front and Geetsly’s, and while I’ve written a little for Geetsly’s in the past, I mostly write for The Front and our new, smaller channel The Braved.

Three of my videos went up this fortnight, and I’ve got some bad news: we’re going to be phasing out The Braved, merging its content with The Front. The two channels are just too similar, and The Braved seems to have lost its momentum. This happens. YouTube is a difficult beast to tame. And we might as well capitalise on The Front’s superior subscriber base.

We’re also going to be creating longer videos, between 20 and 30 minutes, as that’s the direction in which YouTube seems to be heading, in this field at least. So far, I’m enjoying writing the longer scripts. I’m more invested in the content, and it’s more of a challenge.

For now, here are my total stats:

Videos for The Front: 135
Videos for The Braved: 71

Thoughts

I also spent a good while updating my work diary this fortnight, moving from a text file to a spreadsheet. It means I can track my working hours better and use pie charts and stuff, which is rad.

In general, a productive yet weird week, punctuated by a hectic weekend. Am I becoming… social? Who would have thought?
