Fortnightly update 73
Update 73: 12.09.2022 to 25.09.2022
In this fortnightly series, I share my triumphs (and failures) as a writer.
Short fiction
I’m currently submitting short fiction, mostly flash fiction and short stories, to online magazines and such for publication.
I dedicated a lot of time to my fiction this fortnight.
I haven’t felt all that inspired to write stories for a few months now, so when I felt that spark at the beginning of last week, I ran with it. In the end, I wrote a flash piece in the form of an instant messenger conversation, scrapped it, and then drafted a 6k-word horror piece set in Freo. It’s a mess, but it’s also fire. I’m going to let it sit for a few weeks then rewrite it, get some feedback, and polish it off.
I’m tossing around the idea of an anthology of stories set in Freo, but this would likely mean I couldn’t submit those stories anywhere else.
We shall see.
I also shopped my story Offering around a bit.
Here are this fortnight’s stats:
Submissions: 4
Pending: 8 (7 stories; 1 sim sub)
Rejections: 2
Acceptances: 0
Copywriting: Frontier Media
As I mentioned a few posts back, I’m stepping away from writing for Frontier Media’s YouTube channel The Front. However, some of the videos for which I wrote the scripts have yet to come out, so I’m still gonna share them here.
Thoughts
Trying to juggle writing for a living (my copywriting) and writing for fun (my fiction) isn’t easy. If I’m feeling the urge to write stories, it’s pretty hard to ignore. And then if I do decide to write stories for the day, I almost always feel guilty about it. That’s something I want to improve because my fiction brings me great joy (and suffering, of course, always suffering).
This coming fortnight, I’ve gotta tip the scales back in favour of my copywriting. Honestly, though, that brings me almost as much joy.
Thanks for reading <3
