Fortnightly update 84
27.02.2023 to 12.03.2023
My journey as a copywriter and fiction writer.
This fortnight, I finished a big copywriting project, started doing free website reviews, and jazzed up my own website.
Copywriting
Product launch for Sari
Finally, after a month of hard work, I finished writing the product launch I’d been working on for Sari’s Natural Medicine. This was a massive project, and I learnt tonnes. To put it in perspective…
I did 95hrs and 12mins of work over a span of 23 workdays. This included:
- 215 emails to and from the client
- 13 Loom videos to the client
- 10 client phone calls with the client
- 6 customer research calls
- 3 customer research surveys (+3 emails)
- 3 product launch video scripts (+3 slideshows)
- 11 product launch emails
- 11 product launch social media posts
- 1 product launch sales page
- + other bits of copy I can’t quantify
Going forward, I need a better project management system and I need to get real about quoting for meetings correspondence. I also enjoyed writing the actual email sequence, so I might try to land a few more email gigs.
Free website reviews
I’d been toying with the idea of offering free website reviews for a few months, but last week I made it official.
Basically, anyone can send me a link to their site and I’ll review it in a 10-minute Loom video. Well, they tend to go for a little longer than that.
I did one for Tim King, another copywriter, the other day. If you wanna check it out:
Definitely not gonna use my webcam’s built-in mic next time!
P.S. You can check out Tim’s response in the video’s comments. He seems to get a lot out of it.
My website
As for my own site, I recently switched to using Elementor in WordPress and I’ve been jazzing up my homepage. Still a lot of work to go, but shit, why hadn’t I been using a tool like Elementor the whole time? It’s like I enjoy suffering or something.
Fiction
I attend a writers’ group in Freo every Thursday and right now we’re working on flash fiction stories for the WA Tree Festival. I had something drafted, but I just couldn’t get it to work, so started from scratch the other day.
This new story is definitely sharper (and more fun), but it’s not quite where I need it to be. Another few hours of work, and then I reckon I’ll send it out for feedback.
More on this soon, hopefully.
Other than that, it isn’t news that I’m putting less of myself into my fiction. Instead of working on it from 6 AM to 8 AM, I now leave a window from 3 PM to 6 PM for creative projects. It’s a far more casual arrangement, and I think that’s how it needs to be because, honestly, I want to get my copywriting career off the ground.
Gotta pay for me pints somehow.
Thoughts
If all goes well, I’ll have my entire website looking flashy by the end of next fortnight, and my story for the Tree Festival will be ready to go. I’ve got a few more client projects in my sights as well.
In my personal life, I went down to Margaret River with five mates on the weekend and we played about 20 games of MTG and drank about a million beers. This was for my 30th, which is coming up in less than a month. I definitely didn’t think that’s what I’d be doing at this age, but I’m fucking glad it is.
Thanks for reading 🖤
